How do I get a new routine?
Changing one's own behaviour permanently is not easy, the success rate is often low. 95 percent of all started diets fail and only 8 percent of the people can realize their New Year's resolutions. The plans range from more exercise and changing to a healthier diet to more reading or spending time with the family.
We are currently in a situation that forces us to radically change our habits. This is also a chance to try out new and long-awaited behaviours and make them become routines. Behavioural change is a skill that can be learned. In the following we would like to present three strategies that help to transform lifestyles in the long term.
Small steps
Once the decision to implement a new behaviour has been made, motivation is usually very high at the beginning. Suddenly, people suddenly visit the gym every day or do not eat anything at all in the evening. After a few days, however, the initial motivation disappears, the first problems and obstacles appear and you fall back into old patterns. This is completely normal. If we are tired, exhausted or stressed, we return to familiar habits. This is due to the fact that our brain is trimmed for efficiency and switches to emergency operation in such situations. Therefore it is better to take small steps and slowly get used to a new behaviour. It is better to do a movement unit twice a week at the beginning and stay on it a year later than to whip through five units a week for two weeks and then stop. With variant 1 you have 104 units. With option 2, you have 10.
One focus
Man is an impatient being and it is best that the whole list of changes happen simultaneously and immediately. Leading a more active lifestyle, meditating daily and following a diet are very ambitious wishes. It is better to focus on one behavior and concentrate all efforts on changing one single aspect. Once the desired behaviour has been successfully integrated into everyday life, one can think ahead. One step after the other!
Support
Many people believe that changing behaviour only requires discipline and willpower. However, the environment is equally important. The probability of successfully changing behaviour is higher if you receive support. Tell your family and friends about your plan and ask for their emotional and motivational support. Their encouragement and help will make it easier for you to successfully maintain the new behavior. We are also happy to help you - contact us!
